2025 Award Guidelines for Entrants

 

Young Investigator's Award

The Young Investigator Award is the most prestigious research prize awarded at the CSANZ NZ Regional ASM. The prize is award for the best individual research and will be up to $7,500 for costs to attend in an international ASM within two years of receiving the award.

In acknowledgement of the significance of the Award, the rules regarding eligibility, application process, and judging have been updated are are applicable for the 2025 ASM.

Eligibility

  • Advanced Trainees or Research Fellows in cardiology or cardiac surgery, undergraduate students, nurses and technologists, and scientists up to and including the level of post-doctoral Fellow. Applicants must still be in training.
  • Applicants must be New Zealand members of the Society.
  • The work must have been carried out in Australia or New Zealand and the applicant must have made a significant contribution to the concept and execution of the work

Application Process

  • Investigators may submit only one application for the Young Investigator Award category each year.
  • An extended abstract of 800 to 1200 words must be submitted at the time of abstract submission to allow the selection panel to fully evaluate the work.
  • The applicant must include in their submission, a letter from the supervisor or director of the laboratory or service from which the work has emanated, clearly detailing the contribution made by the applicant towards the work being presented. This must include the specific contribution of the candidate to the study design, protocol completion, and analysis of results.
  • If an abstract is submitted for the Young Investigator Award and not accepted, it is automatically considered for inclusion in the general Scientific Meeting. The applicant must be prepared to present it in this category as a poster or presentation, to be decided by the Convenors.
  • Finalists for the award will be selected by a selection panel of clinicians/researchers and a Chair appointed by the NZ Committee.

Judging

  • A panel of three senior clinicians/researchers will be appointed by the NZ Committee and a Chair of the panel designated.  At least one of the panel members will be a clinician or scientist working in New Zealand.
  • The Chair of the panel will advise the ASM organisers of the outcome.
  • The judges' decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Nurse Member Investigator's Award

There will be 1 up to $3,500 prize for costs to attend a Cardiac Society New Zealand or Australian ASM within two years of receiving the award.

Conditions

  • The applicant must be domiciled in New Zealand.
  • The Award is restricted to New Zealand Nurse Members of the Society.
  • The work must have been carried out in Australia or New Zealand and the applicant must have made a significant contribution to the concept and execution of the work.
  • The work must be substantially new.
  • The work must not have been previously presented at a Cardiac Society Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • The prize will only be awarded if a contribution is considered to be of sufficient merit.
  • The judges' decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Allied Health Member Investigator Award

There will be 1 up to $3,500 prize for costs to attend an Australian ASM within two years awarded to a an allied health member for best presentation.

Conditions

  • The applicant must be domiciled in Australia or New Zealand.
  • The Award is restricted to Members of the Society.
  • The work must have been carried out in New Zealand and the applicant must have made a significant contribution to the concept and execution of the work.
  • The work must be substantially new.
  • The work must not have been previously presented at a Cardiac Society Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • The prize will be awarded by a panel of judges but will only be awarded if a contribution is considered to be of sufficient merit.
  • The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

CSANZ Equity Prize

There will be 1 up to $3,500 prize for costs to attend an Australian ASM within two years awarded to a an allied health member for best presentation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must be domiciled in New Zealand.
  • CSANZ membership is required or must be pending at the time of abstract submission.
  • Prior winners of the CSANZ Equity Prize are ineligible.
  • The work must be conducted primarily in New Zealand, Australia or the Pacific, be significantly new, and the applicant must be the primary contributor and first author.
  • Abstracts for this category can be submitted in other Prize categories however can only win one.
  • The research must not have been previously published or presented at a national meeting in New Zealand

Additional Abstract Submission Criteria

The research should demonstrate:

  • Leadership, governance and partnerships: Detailing engagement with Māori, Pacific peoples, women, migrants, refugee, disabled, and/or rural communities, including meaningful community partnerships.
  • Contribution to reducing inequity and delivering tangible community benefits: Highlighting how the research addresses health issues and provides measurable benefits for Māori, Pacific, women, immigrant and/or rural communities.

Submission Requirements

  • Abstracts must not exceed 250 words, with an additional 150 words addressing eligibility and submission criteria.
  • A support letter from a supervisor is required, detailing the applicant’s contribution, position, new work specific to the submission, and prior presentations.
  • Only one paper submission per applicant is allowed.
